ABOUT SCL@HKU

Dedicated to Urban Sustainability Research

Based at the University of Hong Kong, the Sustainable Cities Lab (SCL) leverages advanced geospatial and AI technologies to decode complex environmental challenges. By integrating remote sensing, GIS, spatial analytics, and multi-dimensional modeling, we transform planetary-scale data into actionable insights for global sustainability.

We believe that solving the climate crisis requires collaborative, data-driven innovation. To bridge the gap between academia and industry, we openly share our high-fidelity datasets spanning urban evolution, carbon emissions, and the water-energy-food nexus, empowering global researchers and policymakers to build a resilient future.

Earth Observation & Geospatial Analysis

Pioneering multi-source remote sensing, particularly nighttime light data, to map long-term global urban expansion.

Coupled Human-Natural Systems

Quantifying the complex interactions between urbanization, land use, and the water-energy-food nexus.

Urban Climate & Resilience

Investigating urban heat island effects, building energy dynamics, and nature-based adaptation strategies.

Building Energy & Emissions

Developing high-resolution urban building energy models and spatial-temporal carbon emission inventories.
